Before we Begin…

I’ve had a personal blog for quite a few years now and I still keep it (fairly) updated.  So why am I starting a new place to play online?  Well, my personal blog is just that – it’s personal!  It’s more of a digital smashbook: a disorganized hodge-podge of whatever is going on in my head at that moment.  I have a few regular readers, but I don’t write to be read there, if that makes any sense.  Lately I’ve had the urge to share my creative endeavors with the online community, but sharing them on my personal blog which is *filled* with pictures of my kid (who is, of course, the most adorable little boy in the world!) didn’t seem right.  What’s the fun of sharing if you don’t want to invite folks to read and participate in conversation? Even though my personal blog isn’t private, I didn’t want to invite the whole world to talk there.  So “And, in her Spare Time…” was born.

I’ll be reposting some of the projects that I’d previously shared on my personal blog here as I set up this site, and then I’ll start sharing some of the things that I’m currently working on.  I hope that you’ll enjoy my “get real crafting” posts and that you’ll share your ideas and experiences too!

Hello there.

Hi, I’m Ali.  I’m a mom who works full time out of the home, but in my spare time — wait, what’s that?!

Admittedly, I don’t have a lot of spare time with a toddler, a full-time job, and a husband who works two jobs; but in the time that I can scrape together I really enjoy creative projects.  I like to try any craft that catches my eye: sewing, embroidery, cross stitch, stamping, paper crafts, vinyl crafts… the list goes on and on!  Keep me away from Hobby Lobby.  Don’t let me into Michael’s.  And don’t come with me to Jo-Ann’s unless you’re ready to invest a few hours of time.

I’m not an expert.  My projects are never practically perfect in every way.  I do have a whole craft room of my own, but it’s not a highly decorated Pinterest-worthy retreat, resplendent with glittering craft supplies in myriad glass vessels.  It’s the smallest bedroom in our modest home that’s filled with recycled furniture and things that need to be stored in the attic.  I’m an average mom crafting, learning, and writing about it because I believe that creativity is for everyone and crafting can be accessible to anyone who wants to give it a shot!
