Max’s 1st Birthday Party

IMG_1636

We held Maxwell’s 1st Birthday Party yesterday afternoon and it was so much fun!!  Max had lots of friends and family around him to celebrate and he really seemed to have a great time!

I had a lot of fun planning and prepping for his party!  I focused on the dessert table, and I think it turned out fabulously – exactly how I’d pictured it:

I sewed the pennant banners using leftover pennants from when I made one for Max's nursery. I cut the letters out out of flannel using my Silhouette Cameo.

On the dessert table was: red velvet cupcakes with cream cheese frosting, shortbread cookies shaped like mustaches, marshmallows on striped straws dipped in blue colored chocolate and sprinkles, a red velvet with cream cheese frosting smash cake, and some red candy (Twizzlers, Jolly Ranchers, and Swedish Fish) and some fun non-sweets-treats that guests could bag up and "shave" for later!

I really had a lot of fun incorporating some fun mustache details to celebrate “our little man”!

When I saw mustache cookie cutters, I knew I had to have them! These shortbread cookies were amazing - definitely tasted "like butter and magic" as the girl who I'd gotten the recipe from promised!

Even the tables got mustached!

Our guests even got into the mustache spirit!

Of course there was cake – and Max loved it!

The kids had fun playing with the ball pit (a kiddie pool – pink was all Wham could find lol! – filled with plastic balls), dressing up with the photo props, and playing with balloons.

OK, this ball pit is fun! Emma found a mustache balloon Not sure what they were doing here, but it's cute!

Max had so much fun in the ball pit, in fact, that he didn’t want to get out of it, so he opened gifts from the ball pit!

We had a lot of fun and were so happy to be able to spend some time with our family and friends eating cake and drinking some beers or juice!  We’re so thankful for the outpouring of love for our little guy – it was really a great way to celebrate all of us making it through the first year!

My Little Man is a Whole Year Old!!

max1year

Maxwell is a year old today!  Alex and I keep saying, “A whole year!” and, “Where did this year go?!” because we just can’t believe that our baby is so big already!  Max keeps saying, “Hi” and “Ba ba ba ba ba” because those are the words that he knows.

We had a small celebration for Max tonight.  Alex made two of Max’s favorite foods – green beans and macaroni and cheese – and picked up a cake for Max.  We had dinner, sang “Happy Birthday” to Max, gave him some cake, gave him a tubby, and then let him open up three of his gifts.  We’re doing  a birthday party for him on Sunday, so we’re saving the rest of his gifts for then.  It was a fun, quiet night at home and we’re looking forward to a great celebration with family and friends on Sunday!

This past year has been the best year of our lives.  Watching Max transform from a tiny, squishy, little squawking newborn into a sweet, inquisitive, and silly little boy has been amazing!  We’ve met the challenge of first-time-parenting head on and discovered that we were capable of much more than we ever imagined; and Max surprises us every day with how much he is able to do.  Just today, for example, we gave him a spork with his birthday cake and he dipped it into the cake and shoveled some into his mouth!  Of course, it was the wrong end of the spork that he used, but we’ll get there!

We’re so proud of our Little Man!  Happy Birthday, Max!  We love you and we’re so thankful that we get to be your parents!

Alex's 30th Birthday

So even though I was totally embroiled with work all day, I couldn’t let Alex’s birthday go by without him having cake. So while he was out golfing and I was monitoring processes for work and in between emails, I baked a pumpkin spice cake. Alex’s favorite cake is carrot cake, but I didn’t have any carrots, so I kept googling until I found a recipe that I had all of the ingredients on hand for. Alex loved the cake and I think it turned out pretty well. :)

My Birthday… and another Birthday in 6 months

Today’s my birthday!  Yay!  I’m 32 – holy crap!  As usual, I get a little sentimental on my birthday, so I thought I’d look back at my first birthday post on my blog, which was 9 years ago when I was 23.  Um, 23 year old me cracks me up.  That July, Beck and I went camping with Eric and Sarah and I also got my first apartment.  If you feel so inclined, you can read those posts here.  I love that camping included buying a tent a half hour before we went camping and shopping at the Nine West outlet LOL!

(Brief side note: there’s some sort of church service going on in the park that we live on and while I sit here at my computer it alternately sounds like chanting and operatic singing.  Bizarre.)

So, 32.  That makes me old.  You know what else makes me old?  I’ll be a mommy in six months.  Yep, I haven’t posted about it publicly on my blog yet, but I’m pregnant!  Which is, of course, superfreakingamazingandexciting!!!  Also, my due date is exactly six months from today.  Not that baby will come on that day, I’m sure.  But still.  184 days until January 17th!

Baby at 12 weeks

Sigh :)  I could stare at that all day.  :)

Soyeah – It’s my birthday and my day so far has gone like this: Up at 7:30am to kiss Alex goodbye as he headed out to work (working a 24 hr shift with the fire department today – boo!).  Bummed around for a bit ready baby-related books (what else?).  Decided that I’d finally get around to making a maternity shirt out of a hot pink empire waisted dress from Target that was too short to wear without leggings.  I don’t need to wear maternity shirts yet, but I felt like wearing something “new” today and I am getting a little thicker around the middle, so I figured I might as well convert the dress into a shirt now.  It actually turned out pretty cute – maybe I’ll post some pictures later.  Oh yeah – so I did that first thing this AM while the cats whined at me until I finished up and fed them.  Since then, I’ve been bumming around on the couch and at my computer.  I’ll be heading up to CP shortly to hang out by the pool with the family and I think there will be cake and ice cream. :)
